Google Introduces Three New Gemini Models, Delays 3.5 Pro Release

Google DeepMind has unveiled three new additions to its Gemini AI model lineup: Gemini 3.6 Flash, Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, and Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber. These models aim to enhance efficiency and performance across various applications.

Gemini 3.6 Flash serves as Google’s primary model, offering improved capabilities in coding, knowledge work, and multimodal tasks. Notably, it reduces token usage by up to 17%, making it more cost-effective than its predecessor, Gemini 3.5 Flash.

Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite is designed as the most economical option in the series, providing a balance between performance and affordability. Meanwhile, Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber is a specialized model fine-tuned for identifying and addressing cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Access to this model is currently limited to governments and select partners through a pilot program.

These releases underscore Google’s commitment to delivering AI solutions that prioritize efficiency, low latency, and reliability, particularly for organizations developing AI agents at scale.

However, the anticipated update to Google’s flagship model, Gemini 3.5 Pro, was notably absent from this announcement. The last update to the Pro series occurred in February. In the interim, competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic have introduced their own advanced models, such as GPT-5.5 and Claude Opus 4.8, respectively, highlighting the rapid pace of development in the AI sector.

Google had previously indicated that Gemini 3.5 Pro was undergoing internal testing and expected to launch soon. Recent reports suggest that internal challenges in meeting performance benchmarks have contributed to the delay.

Gemini Pro models are typically designed for complex reasoning and coding tasks, while the Flash variants focus on cost efficiency and faster response times for production environments.

Logan Kilpatrick, a product lead at Google DeepMind, mentioned that Gemini 3.5 Pro is currently being tested with partners and is expected to be released in the near future. Additionally, the team has initiated pre-training for the upcoming Gemini 4 model.

The introduction of these new models reflects Google’s strategic focus on providing versatile AI tools that cater to a range of needs, from cost-effective solutions to specialized applications like cybersecurity. The delay in releasing Gemini 3.5 Pro suggests a cautious approach to ensuring that flagship models meet high performance standards before public deployment.
