GM and Ford Shift Focus Away from Electric Vehicles

In recent years, General Motors (GM) and Ford have significantly reduced their emphasis on electric vehicles (EVs) during investor communications. This shift marks a departure from their earlier aggressive EV strategies.

Historically, both automakers invested heavily in EV development. GM introduced the Chevrolet Bolt EV in 2016, positioning itself ahead of competitors like Tesla’s Model 3. Ford, in 2022, restructured its operations to create Ford Model e, a division dedicated to EVs and digital services. These initiatives underscored a strong commitment to electrification.

However, recent developments indicate a change in direction. GM has faced challenges with its BrightDrop electric van division, leading to layoffs and production halts. In October 2025, GM announced the cessation of BrightDrop operations due to slower-than-expected market growth and changing regulatory environments. Additionally, GM sold its stake in the Ultium Cells battery plant in Lansing, Michigan, to partner LG Energy Solution in December 2024, reflecting a strategic retreat from certain EV ventures.

Ford has also adjusted its EV approach. Despite the initial success of the F-150 Lightning, the company has experienced production delays and market challenges. In 2022, Ford split its operations into Ford Blue for internal combustion engine vehicles and Ford Model e for EVs, aiming to streamline focus. However, the anticipated rapid growth in EV sales has not materialized as expected, leading to recalibrated strategies.

Analysts attribute this shift to several factors: slower-than-anticipated consumer adoption of EVs, supply chain disruptions affecting production, and evolving regulatory landscapes. Both companies continue to develop and sell EVs but are now balancing these efforts with their traditional vehicle lines.

This strategic pivot suggests that while GM and Ford remain committed to electrification, they are adopting a more measured approach. Investors and industry observers will be keen to see how these automakers navigate the evolving automotive landscape, balancing innovation with market realities.
