Gemini App Bug Causes Feature Rollbacks and UI Reversions on Android
On April 18, 2026, a significant bug emerged in the Gemini app for Android, leading to the rollback of several recently introduced features and a reversion of the user interface to previous designs. This issue has affected users across both stable and beta channels running Google app version 17.14.
Feature Rollbacks:
One of the primary issues involves the ‘plus’ menu within the prompt box. Previously, this menu allowed users to upload NotebookLM notebooks, presented in a list format. Due to the bug, this functionality has been removed, and the design has reverted to displaying side-by-side pills. Notably, the Tools menu remains unaffected at this time.
Additionally, the Temporary chat button, which was located in the top-right corner adjacent to the user avatar, has disappeared. Furthermore, the Import memory to Gemini option is now missing from the profile menu.
User Interface Reversions:
The bug has also caused several UI elements to revert to their previous states. The background color has changed from black back to gray, and the suggested action pills have lost their outlines. Outside of the Gemini app, the Android overlay has returned to its prior design, lacking full access to the Tools menu. The fullscreen glow effect has been removed, leaving only the overlay highlighted.
