Ford has announced a strategic partnership with Apple to integrate Apple Maps directly into its forthcoming Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform. This collaboration aims to enhance the navigation experience in Ford’s next-generation electric vehicles, starting with a midsize truck priced around $30,000, set to debut in 2027.
By leveraging Apple’s new MapKit for Automotive software development kit (SDK), Ford’s UEV platform will offer drivers turn-by-turn directions using natural language, real-time traffic and incident information, intuitive search featuring detailed place cards, and routing options to help users easily find the best route to their destination. Additionally, Ford UEV drivers will benefit from an intelligent EV routing functionality, including battery preconditioning. This feature prepares the battery before arriving at a charger, reducing charge times by ensuring it’s at the optimal temperature.
Importantly, Apple Maps will run natively within the vehicle’s infotainment system, separate from Apple CarPlay, which mirrors apps from an iPhone onto the vehicle’s central display. This native integration ensures a seamless and responsive user experience without the need for a connected smartphone.
Beyond navigation, the integration will support Ford’s next-generation BlueCruise hands-free driver assistance system. By utilizing road-level information from Apple Maps, the upgraded BlueCruise will manage entire highway journeys, including entrance and exit ramps. Ford has indicated plans to evolve this system towards “point-to-point autonomy,” with aspirations for eyes-off driving capabilities by 2028.
For Ford’s commercial fleet customers, this partnership offers additional advantages. Businesses can utilize the integrated mapping platform to route drivers efficiently to job sites, monitor fleet vehicles in real-time, and potentially integrate with smart home systems for automated actions upon arrival.
This collaboration underscores Ford’s commitment to delivering advanced technology in its electric vehicle lineup. By embedding Apple Maps directly into its UEV platform, Ford aims to provide a superior navigation experience that aligns with the evolving expectations of modern drivers. As the automotive industry continues to embrace digital integration, such partnerships highlight the importance of seamless connectivity and user-centric design in the next generation of vehicles.
