Amazon has integrated its cloud gaming service, Luna, directly into the Prime Video app, providing Prime subscribers with immediate access to a selection of games without additional costs. This move follows the company’s earlier decision to eliminate features that allowed users to stream their own game titles and connect to third-party services like Ubisoft+ and EA.
With this integration, Prime members can now access games such as “Masters of the Universe: Legends Unite” and “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” by simply navigating to the new “Games” tab within the Prime Video app. Players can use a compatible controller or their smartphone to engage in both single and multiplayer experiences with minimal setup.
The rollout begins today for Fire TV users in the United States and the United Kingdom. There is currently no information regarding availability on other platforms, such as Google TV or Samsung’s proprietary operating system. This integration mirrors similar initiatives, like Samsung’s Gaming Hub, which consolidates gaming services into a unified interface. Notably, Google has not introduced a comparable feature since discontinuing Stadia in 2023.
Jeff Gattis, Amazon’s gaming chief, stated that the Luna Premium subscription, priced at $9.99 per month, will continue to be available through the existing Luna app. The integration within the Prime Video app serves as an entry point for Prime subscribers to explore cloud gaming, with the option to upgrade to the premium experience for a broader game selection.
By embedding Luna into the Prime Video ecosystem, Amazon aims to lower the barrier to entry for cloud gaming, targeting users who may not own gaming consoles or PCs. This strategy could significantly expand Luna’s user base by leveraging the extensive reach of Prime Video. However, the success of this integration will depend on the quality and diversity of the game library, as well as the performance of the streaming service. As the cloud gaming market evolves, Amazon’s approach may set a precedent for other streaming platforms to incorporate gaming into their offerings.
