Enigma, a research lab founded less than a year ago, has emerged from stealth mode with a $70 million seed funding round led by Index Ventures and Ribbit Capital, with additional participation from Conviction Partners. The startup aims to revolutionize human-robot interaction by focusing on intuitive interfaces that make controlling robots as straightforward as adjusting a volume knob.
Unlike many robotics companies that concentrate on developing foundation models capable of executing tasks they weren’t explicitly trained for, Enigma is taking a different approach. The company is studying how humans naturally engage with robots to create more user-friendly interfaces and potentially redefine robotic intelligence.
To facilitate this research, Enigma is launching a large-scale online experiment, allowing global participants to interact with over 100 proprietary AI robots housed in facilities in Israel and California. These robots are designed to perform various tasks, including painting, engaging in mock sword fights, and conducting simple chemistry experiments by mixing liquids. Notably, Enigma has developed both the robotic hardware and the underlying models from scratch.
The company was co-founded by Jonathan Jacobi and Gal Niv, who met during their service in Israel’s elite Unit 8200, a renowned cybersecurity unit. Jacobi, recognized as Microsoft’s youngest-ever employee, and Niv, his longtime friend, decided to apply their technical expertise to the field of AI and robotics, despite lacking direct experience in the sector. They assembled a team comprising top AI lab alumni, math Olympiad winners, and individuals who left PhD programs to join the venture.
Shardul Shah, a partner at Index Ventures, highlighted the founders’ outsider perspective as a strength, allowing them to approach the challenges of embodied intelligence with originality. He noted that while industry insiders might focus on teleoperation or dexterity, Enigma is starting from the question of what constitutes the ultimate user experience.
Jacobi emphasized the importance of effortless human-robot interactions, drawing an analogy to adjusting a car’s volume knob. He pointed out that current robotic systems often require extensive user input, leading to frustration and inefficiency. Enigma’s goal is to develop an interface that simplifies this process, making robot manipulation as intuitive as turning a dial.
Through its public experiment, Enigma aims to gather data on various methods of human-robot communication. This research could lead to the development of interfaces that significantly enhance the usability and accessibility of robotic systems, potentially transforming industries that rely on automation.
