With the launch of the iPhone 18 Pro models, Apple has revamped the Dynamic Island to support three Live Activities at once. The update is designed to help users monitor multiple ongoing tasks—such as navigation, flight updates, or timers—from the top of the screen with less interruption.
A More Efficient Island
The Dynamic Island—a feature wrapped around the Face ID sensors—has been re-engineered to be smaller and more functional than in previous iPhones. Alongside its reduced size, the feature now supports three concurrent Live Activities. Users can, for example, check their route in Maps, follow a flight’s status via Flighty, and track a timer simultaneously without switching contexts.
What Live Activities Brings to the Table
Live Activities allow apps to provide real‐time updates in the Dynamic Island interface. By displaying running statuses such as travel progress or countdowns, they help keep important information available at a glance—without constantly unlocking the device or switching apps. The ability to juggle three updates opens up possibilities for multitasking like keeping close tabs on commuting, flights, fitness goals, or other timed events all from the top of the screen.
The introduction of this upgraded Dynamic Island suggests Apple is doubling down on making its front sensors and interactive pill‐shaped notification area more central to the user experience. Previously limited to showing one or two live tasks, this refinement enhances how intuitively users can stay updated on real‐world actions happening around them.
This feature rolls out immediately with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max—owners of those models will see the enhanced Live Activities support out of the box. For older iPhones, there is no indication that the three‐activity limit will be supported, suggesting this remains exclusive to the new hardware.
While a smaller, more useful Dynamic Island with multi-tasking capability might seem like a UI tweak, it reflects Apple’s broader push to make peripheral features carry more weight.
