Apple has unveiled its newest wireless earbuds—the AirPods 5—offering a suite of upgrades aimed at boosting value and performance in its entry-level lineup. Revealed at the iPhone 18 Pro event and now available for preorder with shipments due September 18, the new models introduce features like Live Translation and significantly improved Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). What’s New in Style and Sound
The AirPods 5 retain an open-ear form factor similar to AirPods 4, but come with a more advanced multi-port acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ to deliver richer, more detailed audio across varied ear shapes. The Transparency mode has also been enhanced for a more natural representation of outside sounds. Adding Adaptive Audio lets the earbuds adjust between noise cancellation and transparency depending on environmental conditions, while a Conversation Awareness feature reduces media volume automatically when the user starts speaking.
Battery, ANC & Intelligent Features
Battery life has been improved: the wireless charging case version of AirPods 5 delivers up to five hours of playback with ANC on a single charge—one hour more than the previous AirPods 4 model—and approximately 22 hours of total listening time when using the case. The earbuds also introduce what Apple calls “industry-leading” open-ear ANC, which suppresses up to 50% more ambient noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. Thanks to computational audio enhancements and the new acoustic design, users can expect quieter surroundings, more refined audio, and overall better listening performance.
Hands-free intelligence has also been bolstered. With Apple Intelligence features arriving in beta via iOS 27, users gain improved Siri AI integration—letting them access Siri with voice alone, leveraging contextual inputs from apps, messages and photos. Live Translation is part of this upgrade, enabling bidirectional spoken-language translation by pressing both stems or with Siri. This feature is available across compatible models when paired with the latest firmware and Apple Intelligence-enabled devices.
Pricing, Durability & Availability
There are two versions of AirPods 5. The base model (no wireless charging) is priced at $129, while the model with a wireless charging case and stem-based volume swipe is $149. Both support USB-C, and the wireless-case version also supports charging via Apple Watch chargers or Qi-certified pads.
Regarding durability, these earbuds are built to better resist dust, sweat, and water. From a sustainability standpoint, they contain 40% recycled materials overall—including 70% recycled plastic in the wireless case and fully recycled cobalt in the battery—and are manufactured using renewable energy where possible. Preorders begin today for the U.S. and 65+ regions, with retail availability set for September 18.
Live Translation on AirPods requires both the latest device firmware and Apple Intelligence to be active. Supported languages and regional availability may vary. Siri AI rolls out initially in English with additional languages following.
