Cursor, an AI-driven startup now integrated into SpaceXAI, has unveiled Origin, a new code hosting platform designed to rival GitHub. Origin offers developers a suite of tools for collaborative codebase management, including browsing, editing, handling pull requests, and repository storage.
This launch marks a strategic expansion for Cursor, which has previously focused on automated web development through its AI Code Editor. The company plans to introduce “agent native” features to Origin and is developing a broader app ecosystem to enhance coding efforts within the platform.
Notably, Origin is designed for interoperability with GitHub. Developers can synchronize their GitHub repositories with Origin, allowing seamless code transfer between the two platforms. Cursor’s blog explains, “Your GitHub repos can sit alongside the ones Cursor hosts. Connect GitHub to Cursor, pick your org, and you’ll see the repos you can sync. Select one and Cursor pulls it in.”
The timing of Origin’s release coincides with ongoing frustrations over GitHub’s service reliability. On the same day as Origin’s launch, GitHub experienced a significant worldwide outage lasting over six hours, with a nearly 20% error rate reported globally. This incident is part of a series of outages; over the past year, GitHub has suffered 257 outages, leading to a visible exodus of high-profile users.
Despite these challenges, GitHub remains a dominant force in code hosting, boasting approximately 180 million developers as of October 2025. Founded in 2007 and acquired by Microsoft in 2012, GitHub continues to be the largest source code host globally.
Cursor’s introduction of Origin presents a compelling alternative for developers seeking more reliable and integrated code hosting solutions. As GitHub faces ongoing service issues, Origin’s seamless integration with existing GitHub repositories and its promise of enhanced features could attract developers looking for stability and innovation in their coding platforms.
