Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS), a leading fusion energy startup, has secured $4 billion in funding over the past seven years, including a recent $1 billion investment. This substantial financial backing underscores growing confidence in CFS’s mission to develop viable fusion power solutions.
In a strategic move, CFS appointed Lorence Kim as its new Chief Financial Officer. Kim, who previously served as CFO at Moderna, played a pivotal role in guiding the biotech company through its initial public offering (IPO) in December 2018. His experience in steering a company from groundbreaking scientific research to commercial success is seen as a valuable asset for CFS.
Kim drew parallels between the current state of fusion energy and the early days of mRNA technology, noting that both are scientifically validated but not yet commercially proven. He emphasized that fusion energy is closer to commercialization than many might assume.

Additionally, CFS is advancing its commercial-scale power plant, ARC, with plans to commence operations in the early 2030s. The company has selected a site in Chesterfield County, Virginia, and is in the process of obtaining necessary permits.
