Anthropic’s advanced AI model, Claude Fable 5, is now accessible globally following the U.S. Department of Commerce’s decision to lift export restrictions imposed in June 2026. This development marks the end of a suspension that began when concerns arose over the model’s potential cybersecurity vulnerabilities.
In mid-June, the U.S. government implemented export controls on Claude Fable 5 and its counterpart, Mythos 5, after reports suggested that the models could be manipulated to identify software vulnerabilities and generate exploit code. This action led Anthropic to suspend access to both models to comply with the directive.
To address these concerns, Anthropic introduced a targeted classifier designed to block specific prompts that could lead to misuse. This safety measure effectively reroutes flagged queries to an older model, Opus 4.8, thereby mitigating potential risks without altering Fable 5’s core capabilities.
Following the implementation of these safeguards, the Commerce Department’s Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) reviewed and approved the measures, resulting in the lifting of the export restrictions. As of July 1, 2026, Claude Fable 5 is available to users worldwide on platforms including Claude Platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork. For Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans, Fable 5 will be included for up to 50% of weekly usage limits through July 7, after which it will be available via usage credits.
This incident underscores the delicate balance between advancing AI technology and ensuring national security. While the swift reinstatement of Claude Fable 5 demonstrates effective collaboration between the private sector and government agencies, it also highlights the need for ongoing vigilance and adaptive safety measures in the deployment of powerful AI models.
