A sophisticated scam operation has infiltrated the Mac App Store, targeting users seeking artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT. This scheme involves deceptive applications that lure users into costly, recurring subscription fees without delivering the promised functionality.
The Deceptive Network of Apps
At the heart of this scam are four applications:

These apps are attributed to developers named Hira Amin, Hadiqa Bashir, Amna Malik, and Hamza Javed. Notably, these developers lack affiliations with legitimate corporate entities and use generic Gmail addresses for customer support. Their privacy policies are hosted on basic Google Sites pages, raising red flags about their authenticity.
Bait-and-Switch Tactics Exposed
Security researcher Alex Kleber uncovered that these applications mislead users by displaying a model selector featuring GPT-5.4. However, all user queries are routed to gpt-5-nano, a less advanced and cheaper model. This discrepancy means users pay a premium for a service they do not receive, with developers profiting from the difference.
Trapping Users in Costly Subscriptions
The scam extends to the payment process. The apps present a Continue to Free option, which, when clicked, prompts immediate payment demands—a classic bait-and-switch maneuver. Three of the four apps offer a lifetime subscription for $99.99, an unsustainable promise given the operational costs associated with AI query processing. If one app is removed from the store, the scammers rely on the remaining clones to continue generating revenue. Their strategy hinges on users initiating free trials and forgetting to cancel, leading to unexpected charges.
