XREAL’s a01 smart sunglasses attempt to deliver cinematic experiences directly onto your face. Released in May, these glasses act as a wearable external monitor, not an AR headset. They plug into a laptop, phone, or handheld device via USB-C, lack onboard power or battery, and are priced at about $300. Built with dual mini OLEDs at 1080p and capable of reaching up to 1,600 nits, they produce vivid, projector-like visuals—especially in dark settings.
Immersive visuals with trade-offs
Hooked up to a laptop, the a01 creates a strikingly immersive theater-like feel, especially when viewing via streaming services. The visuals are colorful, detailed, and bright enough to rival some cinematic setups. But that immersion comes at the cost of redundancy—why look through glasses when your laptop screen, just inches away, is showing the same thing?
Because the glasses only mirror content, the host device must remain active, or playback can be disrupted—this holds particularly true when using a phone. Any movement or movement-induced jostling can interrupt the view. The glasses can also get unexpectedly warm. They rest on delicate facial areas, and even short sessions result in discomfort, especially around the nose and eyes, due to heat buildup. Despite these drawbacks, they’re lightweight and far more comfortable than bulkier smart glasses from other brands.
What’s next: Aura and full AR goals
XREAL is already pushing ahead with Project Aura, a more ambitious wearable powered by Android XR, co-developed with Google and Samsung. Aura brings native hand tracking and access to the Google Play Store, trading off some simplicity for far greater interactive and AR potential. It also introduces a puck—a tethered compute and battery pack—that you can pocket for more freedom of movement.
For hard-core movie watchers, nothing yet beats a large-screen TV or a trip to the theater. A 55-inch OLED or even a modest 4K studio setup delivers viewing comfort, screen size, and visual quality that wearable displays struggle to match. While smart sunglasses like a01 offer novelty, immersion, and portability, they’re best suited as companions—travel buddies, gaming accessories—not primary entertainment sources.
Smart sunglasses are rapidly evolving hardware. XREAL’s a01 gives us a glimpse into what’s possible in wearable entertainment—but it also reminds us why traditional displays still dominate home viewing. The upcoming Aura may shift the balance, especially with Android XR powering more interactive AR features. The key to adoption will be whether these devices can marry immersive experience, comfort, and convenience without redundancy.
