Apple’s ‘iPhone Ultra’: A Leap in Foldable Phone Repairability
Apple is poised to redefine the foldable smartphone market with its upcoming ‘iPhone Ultra,’ anticipated to be the most repairable device in its category. Recent insights from the leaker Instant Digital highlight the device’s innovative internal design, emphasizing ease of disassembly and repair.
In a recent Weibo post, Instant Digital praised the ‘iPhone Ultra’s’ incredibly rigorous underlying engineering logic, suggesting that teardown analyses will confirm these claims upon the device’s release. The internal component arrangement is described as logical yet elegant, eliminating the complex ribbon cable routing that often complicates repairs in other foldable phones. This design achieves a truly high level of modularity, facilitating straightforward repairs.
This revelation builds upon Instant Digital’s February report, which detailed several design elements of the foldable iPhone. Notably, the volume buttons are relocated to the top edge, while Touch ID and Camera Control are positioned on the right side. The device features an iPhone Air-style camera plateau, a single punch-hole front-facing camera, and is available in two color options. The internal design is particularly noteworthy, with the motherboard situated on the right side. To avoid running cables across the screen to the left side for the volume buttons, Apple has opted to route them directly upwards, maximizing internal space.
The internal structure boasts an innovative stacked design, dedicating nearly all available space to the display and battery. This configuration is expected to house the largest battery ever used in an iPhone, enhancing both performance and longevity.
Instant Digital has been a consistent source of information regarding the foldable iPhone. Previous claims include a launch price around $2,000, eSIM-only functionality, and the nearing production of Apple’s foldable displays as of March. The device is also expected to offer three storage capacities, with Camera Control being a key feature.
The ‘iPhone Ultra’ is anticipated to debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max this fall. It is rumored to feature a 7.8-inch inner display, a 5.5-inch cover screen, the A20 chip, C2 modem, Touch ID, and two rear cameras.
