Apple’s highly anticipated foldable iPhone continues to encounter production challenges, casting uncertainty over its exact launch timeline. Despite Foxconn’s ongoing efforts to finalize mass-production adjustments, the device’s release date remains undecided.
Apple has entrusted Foxconn with overseeing the transition from new product introduction (NPI) to mass production, leveraging the assembler’s expertise in precision structural components and large-scale production optimization. Industry insiders suggest that Foxconn is uniquely positioned to meet Apple’s production targets for this complex device.
These developments contrast with earlier reports indicating smoother progress. In April, Foxconn initiated trial production, and subsequent reports suggested that Apple had increased its order to approximately 10 million units after resolving issues related to the hinge and circuit boards. As recently as two weeks ago, reports indicated that the device had entered mass production without anticipated delays. However, the latest information suggests that the engineering validation phase may have introduced a delay of one to two months, with the hinge structure and display durability testing remaining significant bottlenecks.
The foldable iPhone is expected to feature a book-style design, boasting an inner display measuring approximately 7.7 to 7.8 inches and a 5.5-inch cover screen. The device is anticipated to have a thickness of around 4.5mm and a starting price exceeding $2,000. Despite the production challenges, the foldable iPhone is still projected to be unveiled alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models in September.
Apple’s foray into the foldable smartphone market represents a significant step in its product evolution. However, the persistent production hurdles underscore the complexities involved in developing and manufacturing foldable devices. As competitors like Samsung and Huawei continue to refine their foldable offerings, Apple’s ability to overcome these challenges will be crucial in determining its competitiveness in this emerging market segment.
