Apple Wallet’s digital driver’s license feature is poised to expand to Utah and Virginia, according to recent findings. This development suggests that residents in these states will soon have the option to store their driver’s licenses digitally on their iPhones and Apple Watches.
Apple introduced the capability to add digital state IDs and driver’s licenses to Apple Wallet in 2021. However, the adoption by individual states has been gradual. As of now, the feature is available in 14 states and Puerto Rico, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, West Virginia, and Arkansas. The addition of Utah and Virginia would bring the total to 16 states plus Puerto Rico.
Digital IDs in Apple Wallet offer enhanced convenience and security. Users can present their digital driver’s license at select Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints and participating businesses, reducing the need to carry a physical ID. The system employs biometric authentication through Face ID or Touch ID, ensuring that only the device owner can access the digital ID. Additionally, the data is encrypted, and neither Apple nor the issuing state can track when or where the ID is used.
To add a driver’s license to Apple Wallet, users need an iPhone 8 or later running the latest version of iOS, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later with the latest watchOS. The process involves scanning the physical ID and completing a series of facial recognition steps to verify identity. Once added, the digital ID can be used in various scenarios, such as airport security checks and age verification at certain venues.
While the expansion to Utah and Virginia is promising, it’s important to note that the timeline for availability depends on both Apple and state authorities. Residents in these states should stay tuned for official announcements regarding the rollout.
