Apple has shelved its long-rumored AI pendant device, despite the company’s current focus on expanding its artificial intelligence efforts. The project—a wearable pin or pendant intended to capture environmental visuals for Siri—has been formally postponed, for reasons not disclosed. Earlier reports suggested it would enable users to query nearby objects without using their iPhone to take a photo. The delay puts this concept further from reality.
What We Know About the Pendant
The pendant has circulated in rumors since January. Its envisioned features included a camera to record the user’s surroundings and feed that data directly into Siri AI—allowing users to ask questions about their environment without needing to snap a photo with another device. However, the postponement appears indefinite, with no clear timeline for when—or whether—Apple might revive the initiative.
Why the Delay Makes Sense
This isn’t the only hardware work Apple has underway that could cover similar use cases. For example, there are reports of upcoming AirPods models equipped with integrated cameras expected sometime in 2027, which could serve similar spatial awareness functions. At the same time, the Apple Watch Series 12 is introducing a new “Siri Recap” feature: an audio intelligence system that listens to your day’s sounds and generates a summary.
Because Apple already has wearables in development that address environmental awareness and contextual interaction, the pendant might have become redundant from the company’s perspective. Leveraging multiple platforms—audio, wrist wearables, and earbuds—might offer broader utility without needing a single device dedicated to vision-based AI input.
The postponement isn’t necessarily the end. If one of the existing wearables—like Watch or AirPods—effectively demonstrates demand and capability, Apple could circle back to the pendant project. For now, it seems focus has shifted toward feature-rich compute platforms more likely to reach consumers sooner.
What this means is Apple is consolidating its AI hardware roadmap. Instead of adding one more gadget to its catalog, it’s doubling down on integrating visual and audio intelligence into wearables it already produces.
