Apple Introduces Genmoji in iOS 27 for Personalized Emoji Suggestions from Text and Photos

iOS 27’s Genmoji: Personalized Emoji Suggestions Based on Your Text and Photos

Apple is set to enhance user communication with the introduction of Genmoji in iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. This innovative feature will generate personalized emoji suggestions by analyzing the text you type and the content stored in your Photos app.

Traditionally, the Messages app offers emoji suggestions as you type. With the upcoming update, this functionality will expand to include Genmoji—custom emojis created by combining frequently used phrases with relevant images from your photo library. This integration aims to provide a more personalized and expressive messaging experience.

Despite Apple’s claims of widespread adoption since its 2024 debut, Apple Intelligence has struggled to gain significant traction among users. To address this, the company plans to promote Genmoji more actively in iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. According to Bloomberg’s Power On newsletter, users will receive prompts encouraging them to utilize this feature, potentially increasing its popularity.

For those who prefer a more traditional messaging experience, Apple will provide an option to disable Genmoji suggestions. A simple toggle in the settings will allow users to hide these personalized graphics, ensuring that the feature enhances rather than disrupts user communication.

Additional Updates to Genmoji

The enhancements in iOS 27 build upon previous updates to Genmoji. In iOS 26, Apple introduced the ability to create custom expressions using prompts like Smiling, Shocked, or Sleepy. Users could also add physical traits such as different hairstyles, glasses, and hats to their Genmoji, allowing for a higher degree of personalization.

Furthermore, Apple improved the underlying AI to produce smarter results and higher-quality images. Genmoji support was also extended to Tapback reactions, enabling users to respond to messages with their custom emojis.

These upcoming changes are expected to be unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026 in June, where Apple will showcase the latest advancements in its software ecosystem.
