Apple Develops Feature to Authenticate iPhone Photos

Apple is developing a new feature called Apple Reference Image, designed to authenticate photos taken with iPhone cameras. This initiative aims to address the growing challenge of distinguishing genuine photographs from AI-generated or manipulated images.

In the latest iOS 27 beta 5, code references reveal that Apple Reference Image will utilize unique data tied to the iPhone’s camera hardware to verify the authenticity of photos. This approach ensures that the verification process is closely linked to the specific device that captured the image.

To maintain user privacy, Apple has structured the system so that the raw photo remains on the user’s device. Instead, the image is sent to Private Cloud Compute for authentication, while only specific sensor information and photo metadata are transmitted back to Apple. If a sensor is found to be compromised, Apple may revoke prior authentications associated with that sensor.

The feature is currently disabled by default. Once activated, users can enable it by navigating to Settings > Camera > Reference Image and selecting Reference Mode. It’s important to note that photos must be taken using this new Reference mode to include the necessary provenance information for later authentication.

Authentication is not automatic; users must choose to authenticate a photo after capturing it. During this process, the raw image and associated provenance data are sent to Private Cloud Compute for verification, and Apple assigns a unique ID to the photo.

When sharing authenticated photos, recipients can verify the authenticity locally on their Apple devices without informing Apple which images they are viewing. The information included during sharing may vary depending on the method used (e.g., AirDrop, Messages) and whether the photo is original, edited, or authenticated.

As AI-generated imagery becomes more prevalent, the ability to verify the authenticity of photos is increasingly important. Apple’s development of the Reference Image feature reflects a proactive approach to maintaining trust in digital media. Users should stay informed about this feature’s rollout and consider enabling it to ensure the integrity of their shared images.
