Anthropic has introduced Opus 5, the latest iteration in its Claude series of AI models. This release aims to deliver performance levels approaching those of the more advanced Fable 5 model, but at a significantly reduced cost. Opus 5 is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens, maintaining the same pricing structure as its predecessor, Opus 4.8.
One of the standout features of Opus 5 is its enhanced ability to verify its own work and iteratively refine outputs until successful completion. This improvement is particularly evident in tasks such as developing computer vision pipelines from incomplete prompts, where Opus 5 has demonstrated superior performance.
In contrast to Fable 5, Opus 5 operates without the 30-day data retention policy, addressing privacy concerns that have been associated with previous models. While certain safeguards remain in place—particularly concerning cybersecurity applications like exploit generation and penetration testing—Opus 5 offers a more flexible user experience. For instance, it is restricted from scanning for vulnerabilities in software binaries but is permitted to analyze source code for potential issues, a function more aligned with defensive security practices.
Anthropic has also introduced a new feature called Automatic Fallbacks. This beta option automatically redirects requests to a less powerful model when a prompt triggers safety classifiers, ensuring users receive functional responses instead of error messages.
The release of Opus 5 underscores Anthropic’s commitment to rapidly advancing AI capabilities while making them more accessible and cost-effective.
