Anthropic’s Mythos AI Unveils Critical macOS Vulnerabilities: Apple Responds
In a significant development within the cybersecurity landscape, Anthropic’s advanced AI model, Mythos, has been instrumental in uncovering critical security vulnerabilities in Apple’s macOS operating system. This discovery has prompted Apple to initiate a thorough internal investigation to address these potential threats.
The vulnerabilities were identified by researchers at Calif, a Palo Alto-based security firm. Utilizing techniques derived from their testing of an early version of Mythos in April, the team developed a privilege escalation exploit targeting macOS. This sophisticated attack combines two distinct bugs with advanced methods to corrupt memory, thereby gaining unauthorized access to restricted system areas.
Robert McMillan of The Wall Street Journal highlighted the gravity of the situation, noting that security researchers have discovered a new method to circumvent Apple’s advanced security technologies. This method was uncovered during tests of Anthropic’s Mythos AI software.
The exploit chain devised by Calif effectively bypasses macOS’s built-in protections designed to prevent unauthorized access. If malicious actors were to combine this exploit with other vulnerabilities, they could potentially seize full control of a Mac system, posing a significant security risk.
Apple has acknowledged the findings and is currently reviewing the detailed 55-page report submitted by Calif at Apple Park in Cupertino. An Apple spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to security, stating that they take reports of potential vulnerabilities very seriously.
Thai Duong, CEO of Calif, clarified that while Mythos provided the foundational techniques, the actual exploit was developed by their cybersecurity team. He expressed confidence that the identified bugs would be addressed promptly. Calif plans to release technical details of the exploit once Apple has implemented the necessary patches.
