American Airlines to Equip Over 500 Aircraft with Starlink Wi-Fi by 2027
American Airlines has announced a significant enhancement to its inflight connectivity by partnering with SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service. Beginning in the first quarter of 2027, the airline plans to install Starlink Wi-Fi systems on more than 500 narrowbody aircraft, including the Airbus A321XLR and A321neo models. This initiative aims to provide passengers with faster and more reliable internet access during their flights.
Enhancing Passenger Connectivity
The integration of Starlink’s low Earth orbit satellite network is set to revolutionize the inflight internet experience. Traditional onboard Wi-Fi systems often struggle with speed and stability, especially during peak usage. In contrast, Starlink’s Aero Terminal system offers speeds up to 1 Gbps per antenna, enabling seamless activities such as video streaming, online gaming, video conferencing, and real-time communication.
Heather Garboden, American Airlines’ Chief Customer Officer, emphasized the company’s commitment to keeping passengers connected throughout their journey. She highlighted that travelers will no longer need to pre-download content or endure lagging connections during flights. Jason Fritch, SpaceX’s Vice President of Starlink Enterprise Sales, echoed this sentiment, stating that the partnership aims to deliver a fully connected experience from gate to gate for both leisure and business travelers.
Industry-Wide Shift to Satellite Internet
American Airlines’ adoption of Starlink Wi-Fi reflects a broader trend in the aviation industry toward satellite-based inflight internet solutions. United Airlines has already begun implementing Starlink internet on select aircraft, while Southwest Airlines plans to launch its Starlink-powered Wi-Fi service in the upcoming summer.
Simultaneously, Amazon is expanding its satellite internet endeavors through Project Kuiper and its recent acquisition of Globalstar. This expansion supports services like Apple’s emergency satellite features on iPhone and Apple Watch devices. Additionally, Delta Air Lines and JetBlue have entered agreements with Amazon’s satellite internet service to enhance their future inflight connectivity offerings.
