Amazon’s Alexa Tablets Get Google Play & New Hardware Lineup

Amazon has launched a brand-new series of Alexa Tablets that marks a major shift in its tablet strategy. These devices, unveiled October 8, 2026, run Android rather than Fire OS, and come with built-in Google Play Store access alongside its Alexa+ AI assistant. The line includes three models: the high-end Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, mid-range Alexa Tablet 11, and compact Alexa Tablet 8. These are designed to appeal beyond Amazon’s usual user base.

Hardware Upgrades & Display Perks

The top-tier Alexa Tablet 12 Pro sports a 12-inch display with 120Hz refresh rate, 3:2 aspect ratio, and 280 PPI. You can also get it with a Nanomatte anti-glare option. The unit has an aluminum unibody design at 6.5mm thickness, offering sleek portability. Amazon claims it delivers roughly triple the CPU speed and ninefold GPU performance compared to any of its previous tablets. Other standout features include Dolby Atmos speakers, Wi-Fi 6E, and up to 16 hours of video playback.

The Alexa Tablet 11 brings a 2.5K display at 90Hz, 276 PPI, and a 16:10 aspect ratio. It targets gamers, streamers, and readers with dual Dolby Atmos speakers and approximately 15 hours of video playback. Priced at $329.99, it will ship in three color options.

The Alexa Tablet 8 is designed for one-handed use and portability. With an 8.7-inch screen, an all-aluminum build, and a weight of 329 grams, it’s ideal for reading, streaming, and browsing when you’re on the move. It starts at $229.99.

New Software Direction & Launch Details

These tablets include Alexa+ with On-Screen Intelligence. Users can issue voice commands or tap an “Ask Alexa” button, plus receive screen-context help — for instance, asking Alexa to evaluate selected hike options from a list.

Every model also features an enhanced Kindle reading mode that silences notifications, reduces blue light, and boosts battery life up to 20 hours.

In addition, Amazon is introducing redesigned accessories for the 12 Pro: the Pro Pen and Pro Keyboard, aiming to transform it into a more capable workstation.

Pre-orders open now. The new Alexa Tablets will be available starting October 14, 2026 in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain follow on October 19. Kids-oriented models of 8.7-inch and 11-inch sizes will also roll out, bundled with cases and Amazon Kids+ subscriptions, and launch in Japan on October 14.

Shifting to Android and offering the Google Play Store is one of Amazon’s most significant product pivots in years. The move reflects growing pressure to meet rising expectations around flexibility, app ecosystems, and performance. If these tablets deliver on their specs, they could challenge rivals from Apple’s iPad line and Android makers, especially for users who want Alexa integration plus Android’s breadth of apps. The launch is worth watching for how it shapes Amazon’s strategy in hardware, software licensing, and positioning in saturated tablet markets going forward.
