Snapchat Introduces Real-Time Music Sharing with ‘Now Playing’

Snapchat has unveiled a new feature called “Now Playing,” enabling users to share their current music tracks in real time via Snap Map. This integration allows users to link their Spotify accounts, displaying the songs they’re listening to and discovering what their friends are enjoying.

In addition to Snap Map, “Now Playing” is integrated with Spotlight videos, Snapchat’s short-form content platform. Users can save songs featured in Spotlight videos directly to their Spotify playlists or visit the track’s page for more information.

Privacy controls are central to this feature. Users can select who sees their listening activity, and the feature doesn’t display past songs or listening history. Sharing remains active as long as Snapchat has been opened within the past 24 hours; inactivity beyond this period pauses sharing automatically. Users can also manually pause sharing for three hours, 24 hours, or indefinitely.

This development aligns with a broader trend of social media platforms incorporating music sharing. TikTok allows users to share songs from streaming services and save tracks they encounter. Instagram offers a similar feature through Notes, enabling users to share their current music choices. Even Spotify has introduced a function for users to share their listening activity with friends in real time.

Snapchat’s head of music, Manny Adler, emphasized the personal nature of music and its role in connecting friends. He stated that “Now Playing” adds a new layer of expression and discovery to Snap Map, helping users share their daily soundtrack and find new music through their existing social circles.

Since its 2017 launch, Snap Map has evolved from a simple location-sharing tool to a multifaceted platform featuring local hotspots, activities, and now, music discovery. With over 450 million monthly users, this expansion reflects Snapchat’s commitment to enhancing user engagement through innovative features.

The “Now Playing” feature is currently rolling out in regions where both Spotify and Snapchat are available, with plans to include Canada soon.

By integrating real-time music sharing, Snapchat not only enriches user interaction but also positions itself competitively in the social media landscape, where music discovery and sharing are increasingly central to user engagement.
