X Tweaks Algorithm to Prioritize Mutual Followers in Feeds

In a move aimed at enhancing user experience, X has updated its algorithm to prioritize content from mutual followers—users who follow each other. This adjustment seeks to make feeds more personalized and reduce the prevalence of unfamiliar interactions.

Nikita Bier, X’s Head of Product, announced the change, noting that the previous algorithm lacked consideration for mutual follower data. This oversight led to reply sections dominated by unfamiliar users, making interactions feel impersonal. By incorporating mutual follower information, X aims to foster a more community-centric environment, facilitating the formation of interest-based clusters.

This update is part of X’s broader strategy to refine its platform. Earlier this year, the company revised its creator monetization program to reward original content over reposted material. Additionally, X introduced a built-in video editor, enabling users to create and edit videos directly within the app.

These enhancements come as X faces competition from platforms like Meta’s Threads, which has been updating its algorithm to foster communities and provide users with greater control over their feeds through features like “Your Algo.”

By prioritizing content from mutual followers, X aims to create a more engaging and personalized user experience, potentially leading to increased user retention and satisfaction.
