A prominent source on Weibo, known as “Fixed Focus Digital,” has indicated that the device’s aluminum-alloy backplate will expand by approximately 2mm.
This information aligns with earlier reports from Apple supplier Tata, which experienced a data breach leading to the release of internal documents and videos. Among the leaked materials was footage purportedly showing the iPhone 18 Pro undergoing drop tests. Observers noted that the device appeared thicker, particularly around the camera module. This design change is speculated to accommodate a redesigned lens system, potentially introducing a variable aperture to the main camera.
In a recent post, “Fixed Focus Digital” referenced the leaked Tata images, stating that both the overall body and the rear camera module of the iPhone 18 Pro have become thicker. The leaker emphasized that the final thickness will be “somewhat surprising.” Additionally, they mentioned that aluminum-alloy midframes are expected to remain common in traditional smartphone designs for the foreseeable future.
