Google Photos Floating Bottom Bar
In February, Google Photos for iOS introduced a floating toolbar featuring tabs for Photos, Collections, and Create, with a separate circular icon for Search. This design offers a streamlined navigation experience, aligning with updates seen in other Google apps like Google Chat and the revamped Google Finance. Despite its debut on iOS, the Android version of Google Photos continues to use the older, taller Material 3-era bottom bar. While Google has showcased this floating bar design for Android on several occasions, including during the Wardrobe launch, it has yet to be implemented. Other Google apps such as Google Fi, Voice, and Passwords + Quick Share also await similar updates.
Gboard Key Redesign
In March 2025, Gboard began testing pill-shaped keys, moving away from the traditional rounded rectangles. This redesign aligns with the Material 3 Expressive aesthetic and follows previous updates to Gboard’s settings and shortcuts. Despite official app screenshots displaying the new key design, it remains unavailable to users. The release of Android 16 QPR1 and the introduction of Material 3 Expressive in August 2025 seemed like opportune moments for this update, yet the redesign has not been rolled out.
Gemini Live Integration with Google Messages
During the Made by Google 2024 event, Google previewed the capability for Gemini Live to send messages via Google Messages. In May, Gemini Live expanded support to include various Connected Apps; however, integration with Google Messages is still absent. Achieving feature parity between Gemini Live and the primary chat experience remains a priority for users seeking a cohesive messaging platform.
