Meta has unveiled a new subscription service, Meta One Premium, priced at $20 per month, which imposes usage limits on certain features of its smart glasses. Notably, the ‘Conversation Focus’ feature is now restricted to three hours of use per month for non-subscribers, while subscribers gain access to 15 hours monthly.
Introduced in May, Meta One Premium offers enhanced functionalities across various Meta platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Meta AI technologies. The subscription aims to provide users with expanded access to features and premium device support for AI glasses.
‘Conversation Focus’ is designed to amplify nearby voices, improving clarity in noisy environments—a function particularly beneficial for individuals with hearing impairments. This feature operates entirely on-device, utilizing beam-forming microphones and advanced processing without relying on cloud services.
The decision to limit an on-device feature behind a paywall has raised questions, as it does not incur additional operational costs for Meta. The company has yet to comment on these new usage restrictions.
This move reflects a broader industry trend where companies are monetizing advanced features through subscription models. While this approach can fund ongoing development, it also risks alienating users who expect full functionality from their purchased devices. Consumers should weigh the value of these subscriptions against their individual needs and usage patterns.
