Google has expanded its AI capabilities by introducing Gemini Spark to the macOS platform, enhancing the Gemini desktop application with advanced local file automation features. This update allows users to manage and manipulate files directly on their Mac, streamlining various desktop workflows.
With the addition of a dedicated Spark tab in the Gemini app’s sidebar, users can now perform tasks such as organizing PDFs in the Downloads folder into labeled subfolders or extracting data from locally stored invoices to create budget spreadsheets in Google Workspace. Users have full control over which folders Spark can access by linking them in the sidebar, and they can revoke this access at any time. Future updates are expected to enable users to initiate tasks on their Mac from their mobile devices.
In addition to local file automation, Google has announced a series of third-party integrations for Spark on web and mobile platforms. New connected applications include Google Tasks, Google Keep, Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rentals. These integrations will allow users to convert Keep notes into task lists, reserve restaurant tables, order groceries, and book apartment tours directly through Spark. While these integrations are rolling out over the next week, support for macOS is anticipated to follow in the coming weeks.
Google is also introducing support for custom Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, enabling users to connect additional services directly into Spark. Furthermore, a new real-time topic tracking feature will allow Spark to monitor blogs, news sites, social media, finance, sports, shopping, weather, and email, alerting users when specified conditions are met.
Gemini Spark for macOS is currently available in beta for Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18 and over in the United States, starting with version 1.80.15.516 of the Gemini desktop app. The Google AI Ultra subscription is priced at $99 per month.
