Snap Spins Off AI Video Team into New Company ‘Dotmo’

Snap Inc. has announced the spin-off of its internal generative AI video team into a separate entity named Dotmo. This new company will concentrate on developing AI models designed to create interactive gaming experiences. The decision to establish Dotmo as an independent firm stems from the substantial costs associated with conducting such advanced AI work within Snap’s existing structure.

Despite operating as a standalone company, Dotmo will maintain a close relationship with Snap. The initial team comprises current Snap employees transitioning to launch the new venture. Additionally, Snap’s Chief Technology Officer, Bobby Murphy, will serve as the lead investor in Dotmo, holding a significant personal stake. However, Murphy will continue his full-time role at Snap, overseeing its generative AI research and development initiatives.

In return for providing talent and licensing its technology for gaming and interactive entertainment platforms, Snap will acquire a substantial equity stake in Dotmo. This strategic move allows Snap to potentially benefit from Dotmo’s future success while alleviating the financial burden of in-house AI development. Dotmo may also seek external funding to support its growth and innovation efforts.

This spin-off marks Snap’s second major restructuring this year. Earlier, the company separated its smart glasses division into a new entity focused solely on developing the Specs product line. This move was intended to provide greater operational focus and alignment for the AR glasses initiative. However, the recent unveiling of the latest Specs model, priced at approximately $2,200, led to a significant drop in Snap’s stock value, reflecting market concerns over the product’s affordability and target audience.

In addition to these structural changes, Snap has implemented cost-cutting measures, including a reduction of approximately 1,000 jobs, representing 16% of its global workforce. These layoffs were attributed to advancements in AI, enabling the company to streamline operations and reduce repetitive tasks.

By spinning off Dotmo, Snap aims to reduce the financial strain associated with its AI initiatives while retaining a vested interest in the burgeoning field of AI-driven interactive entertainment. This approach allows Snap to focus on its core business operations while fostering innovation through strategic partnerships and investments.
