Google Chrome to Remove Older Manifest V2 Extensions by August 31

Google has announced that it will remove all remaining Manifest V2 extensions from the Chrome Web Store by August 31, 2026. This move marks the final phase in the transition to Manifest V3, a framework introduced to enhance the security and performance of Chrome extensions.

Manifest V3, introduced in 2019, aims to make extensions more secure and efficient. However, it has faced criticism for imposing restrictions that affect certain functionalities, notably those used by ad blockers. Despite these concerns, Google has proceeded with the deprecation of Manifest V2.

In July 2025, Google disabled support for Manifest V2 extensions, closing loopholes that allowed users to re-enable older extensions. The upcoming August 31 deadline will remove all Manifest V2 extensions from the Chrome Web Store. While users who installed these extensions before Chrome 138’s release last year can continue using them, they will no longer receive updates or be available for reinstallation from the Chrome Web Store.

Google’s decision to set this deadline underscores its commitment to transitioning all users to the more secure and performant Manifest V3 framework. Users relying on older extensions should seek alternatives compatible with Manifest V3 to ensure continued functionality and security.
