Meta Partners with Reliance for AI Data Center in India

Meta has entered into a partnership with Reliance Industries to establish a 168-megawatt AI-focused data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This collaboration marks Meta’s first AI infrastructure investment in India, a country rapidly emerging as a hub for AI development.

The agreement builds upon the existing relationship between the two companies. In 2020, Meta invested $5.7 billion in Reliance’s Jio Platforms, and in 2025, they launched a $100 million joint venture to develop enterprise AI solutions for both Indian and international markets.

India has become an attractive destination for AI infrastructure investments. Companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, Google, OpenAI, and Uber have recently announced AI and cloud infrastructure projects in the country. Additionally, Blackstone-backed AirTrunk plans to invest $30 billion to build 5 gigawatts of data center capacity in India by 2030. Indian conglomerates like Adani and Tata Consultancy Services have also unveiled significant data center expansion plans to support AI workloads.

The Indian government has introduced policy incentives to attract such investments, including tax exemptions through 2047 for foreign cloud providers on services sold overseas, provided these workloads are run from Indian data centers.

India’s installed data center capacity has grown from approximately 375 megawatts in 2020 to around 1.5 gigawatts in 2025. Industry estimates project this figure could increase more than fivefold to over 8 gigawatts by the end of the decade, driven by cloud adoption, AI workloads, and rising demand for local data processing.

As part of the partnership, Meta will lease capacity at Reliance’s new Jamnagar facility, which will be powered by renewable energy and cooled using desalinated seawater. Meta has committed to covering the entire cost of the energy and water required to support its operations there. Reliance stated that the 168-megawatt facility will be ready within two years and can be expanded over time. The data center will also support Meta’s global infrastructure and AI computing requirements, integrating India more directly into the company’s worldwide network of AI facilities.

Under the agreement, Reliance will provide end-to-end services ranging from design and construction to renewable power, connectivity, and ongoing operations, highlighting the conglomerate’s comprehensive capabilities in supporting large-scale AI infrastructure projects.

This partnership signifies a strategic move by Meta to strengthen its AI capabilities by leveraging India’s growing infrastructure and talent pool. For Reliance, it underscores the company’s commitment to positioning itself as a key player in the global AI landscape. As AI continues to drive technological advancements, such collaborations are likely to become increasingly common, shaping the future of AI development and deployment.
