In a surprising incident earlier this year, a burglar utilized a Waymo autonomous vehicle to commit a theft in San Francisco, as reported by TechCrunch. The individual took a ride to Hot 8 Yoga studio, stole yoga apparel, and departed in the same robotaxi.
Despite the assumption that autonomous vehicles serve as mobile surveillance units, this case highlights limitations in data retention and privacy measures. Waymo’s vehicles do record ride footage, but the duration of data storage remains unclear. By the time authorities obtained a search warrant in April, the January incident’s footage was no longer available. Additionally, exterior camera footage was blurred to protect privacy, hindering suspect identification.
Waymo provided account information to the police; however, this did not lead to the suspect’s apprehension. The company’s privacy policies, while designed to protect user data, inadvertently complicated the investigation.
