Google’s AI Mode Boosts Chrome with Side-by-Side Browsing and Multi-Tab Search

Google Enhances Web Exploration with AI Mode’s Side-by-Side Browsing

Google has introduced a significant enhancement to its AI Mode, allowing users to explore the web more efficiently by opening web pages alongside the AI interface. This update, available on Chrome desktop, enables users to click on a link within AI Mode and have the corresponding web page open adjacent to the AI conversation. This side-by-side browsing experience aims to streamline the process of comparing information, asking follow-up questions, and maintaining the context of the user’s search.

For instance, if a user is searching for a new coffee maker, they can describe their preferences in AI Mode and receive a curated list of options. Upon selecting a specific product, the retailer’s website will open next to the AI interface. Users can then inquire about specific details, such as the ease of cleaning the coffee maker, and AI Mode will provide answers by analyzing the content of the web page and other relevant information from across the web.

Early testers have appreciated this feature, noting that it reduces the need to switch between tabs when engaging with comprehensive articles or lengthy videos. The side-by-side layout helps users stay focused on their tasks while exploring useful web pages.

In addition to side-by-side browsing, Google has introduced a new way to search across multiple Chrome tabs. On both desktop and mobile versions of Chrome, users can tap the new plus menu in the search box on the New Tab page or within AI Mode to select recent tabs to include in their search. This functionality allows users to combine multiple tabs, images, or files and incorporate that context into their AI Mode searches.

For example, if a user is researching local hiking trails and has several tabs open, they can add these to their search and ask for similar trails in a different location. Similarly, students studying for an exam can bring in context from open tabs, class notes, lecture slides, and more to request examples illustrating a particular concept.

These updates to AI Mode are currently available in the United States, with plans for expansion to additional regions in the future.
