GFiber Elevates Internet Speeds: 3 Gig Becomes the New Standard
GFiber, formerly known as Google Fiber, has announced a significant enhancement to its internet service offerings, initiating a shift towards multi-gigabit speeds. Starting in Des Moines, Iowa, the company is upgrading its foundational plan from 1 Gig to 3 Gig, maintaining the original price point of $70 per month established in 2012. This upgrade includes a GFiber Wi-Fi 6E Router, ensuring users can fully leverage the increased bandwidth.
In addition to the base plan enhancement, GFiber is rebranding its service tiers to better reflect the new speed offerings:
– Core 3 Gig: Previously known as Core 1 Gig, this plan now offers symmetrical 3 Gbps upload and download speeds at $70 per month.
– Home 5 Gig: Formerly Home 3 Gig, this plan provides symmetrical 5 Gbps speeds for $100 per month.
– Edge 8 Gig: This top-tier plan remains unchanged, offering symmetrical 8 Gbps speeds at $150 per month.
The Home 5 Gig and Edge 8 Gig plans come equipped with the new GFiber Multi-Gig Wi-Fi 7 Router. This advanced router delivers optimal traffic management, enhanced security features, and supports multi-gigabit wireless speeds throughout the home. Additionally, these higher-tier plans include up to two hours of Internet Battery Backup and an Uptime Guarantee, ensuring consistent connectivity even during power outages.
Des Moines serves as the inaugural market for GFiber’s multi-gigabit internet services. Existing customers in the area have experienced up to threefold increases in their internet speeds without any additional cost or required actions. GFiber achieved this upgrade through a simple software update, highlighting the company’s commitment to building future-proof networks capable of accommodating speed enhancements without the need for extensive infrastructure changes.
Looking ahead, GFiber plans to extend these multi-gigabit services to additional cities. The company is also exploring the implementation of 25 Gig Passive Optical Network (PON) technology, aiming to further elevate internet speeds and performance for its customers.
