This operation is considered the UK’s most significant crackdown on phone theft to date, resulting in the arrest of 18 suspects and the recovery of over 2,000 stolen devices.
The investigation commenced when a victim, whose iPhone had been stolen, used the Find My iPhone feature to trace the device to a warehouse near London’s Heathrow Airport. Upon notifying the authorities, the Metropolitan Police requested the on-site security team to inspect the location. Their search revealed the stolen iPhone among a shipment containing 894 other mobile phones.
This discovery prompted law enforcement to intercept additional shipments destined for the same address. Through meticulous examination, including DNA analysis of the packages, police identified two primary suspects. Subsequent surveillance and intelligence gathering led to coordinated raids on 28 properties, culminating in the recovery of more than 2,000 stolen devices and the apprehension of 18 individuals connected to the smuggling network.

These devices were then sold in China for as much as £4,000 each. Policing Minister Sarah Jones highlighted this trend, stating, We’re hearing that some criminals are stopping dealing drugs and moving on to the phone business because it’s more lucrative.
