World, the biometric ID verification initiative co-founded by Sam Altman, has unveiled the latest iteration of its application, introducing significant enhancements such as encrypted messaging and expanded cryptocurrency transaction capabilities.
Established in 2019 by the startup Tools for Humanity, World launched its initial app in 2023. In an era increasingly challenged by AI-generated digital impersonations, the company aims to provide proof of human tools to distinguish genuine individuals from automated entities.
At a recent event held at World’s San Francisco headquarters, Altman, alongside co-founder and CEO Alex Blania, presented the new version of the app, referred to by developers as a super app. Altman highlighted that the inception of World stemmed from discussions about the necessity for a novel economic model grounded in web3 principles. He emphasized the challenge of identifying unique individuals while preserving privacy.
A standout feature of the updated app is World Chat, an encrypted messaging platform designed to ensure user privacy. Utilizing end-to-end encryption comparable to that of Signal, the privacy-centric messenger, World Chat employs color-coded speech bubbles to indicate whether a conversation partner has been verified through World’s system. This approach encourages verification, enabling users to confirm the authenticity of their contacts. World Chat was initially introduced in beta in March.
Another notable addition is the enhanced digital payment system, allowing users to send and receive cryptocurrency seamlessly. While the app has previously functioned as a digital wallet, the latest version offers expanded functionalities. Users can now receive paychecks directly into the World App and make bank deposits, both of which can be converted into cryptocurrency. Notably, these features are accessible without requiring verification through World’s authentication system.
Tiago Sada, World’s Chief Product Officer, explained that the inclusion of chat functionality was driven by user feedback seeking a more interactive experience. He noted that users desired a more social aspect within the World app. World Chat aims to fulfill this need by providing a secure communication platform. Sada emphasized the effort involved in creating a feature-rich messenger akin to WhatsApp or Telegram, but with encryption and security levels closer to Signal.
World, initially known as Worldcoin, employs a distinctive authentication process. Interested individuals undergo an iris scan using the Orb, a sizable verification device located at the company’s offices. This scan generates a unique, encrypted digital code, resulting in a verified World ID. Users can then utilize this ID to engage with World’s suite of services available through the app.
The introduction of more socially oriented features is strategically aimed at increasing app adoption, addressing the primary challenge of scaling verification. Altman has expressed the ambition to scan the irises of a billion individuals. However, Tools for Humanity reports that, to date, fewer than 20 million people have undergone the scanning process.
Recognizing potential user reluctance to visit corporate offices for eye scans, the company has sought to simplify the verification process. In April, Tools for Humanity announced the development of Orb Minis—handheld, phone-like devices enabling users to perform iris scans from the comfort of their homes. Blania previously indicated that the company envisions transforming Orb Minis into mobile point-of-sale devices or integrating their ID sensor technology into other devices. Such advancements could significantly lower the barriers to verification, potentially leading to broader adoption.
In summary, World’s latest app iteration represents a significant step toward creating a secure, user-friendly platform that combines biometric verification with encrypted communication and cryptocurrency transactions. By addressing privacy concerns and enhancing user engagement, World aims to establish a new standard in digital identity verification and financial transactions.
