Tragedy at Amazon’s Oregon Warehouse: Worker Dies Amidst Safety Concerns
In a somber incident at Amazon’s PDX9 fulfillment center in Troutdale, Oregon, an employee tragically passed away while on duty last week. The worker collapsed on the warehouse floor, and, according to reports from the Western Edge, an independent investigative outlet covering the Pacific Northwest, operations continued around him as he lay unresponsive.
Amazon spokesperson Sam Stephenson expressed the company’s condolences, stating, We’re deeply saddened by the passing of a member of our team, and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with their loved ones during this difficult time. He further mentioned that Amazon has been in contact with the deceased’s family, offering support and resources. Additionally, grief counselors have been made available to employees at the PDX9 facility.
Discussions on a Reddit forum frequented by Amazon fulfillment center workers revealed concerns about the facility’s working conditions. Several individuals claiming to work at PDX9 noted that the installation of soundproof curtains had significantly reduced airflow, leading to elevated temperatures within the warehouse. They speculated that the increased heat, combined with the physically demanding nature of the work, might have contributed to the employee’s death. Notably, some employees observed a cooler environment upon returning to work the following day.
Amazon, however, stated that Oregon’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) determined the incident to be non-work-related. In response to the tragedy, employees were sent home early and compensated for the remainder of their shifts. The subsequent night shift was canceled, with scheduled workers also receiving pay.
The PDX9 warehouse has previously been scrutinized for its working conditions. In 2018, an investigation by Reveal, an investigative journalism outlet, found that 26% of employees at the facility had sustained injuries. Further reports based on 2024 OSHA data indicated that Amazon’s fulfillment centers reported serious injuries at a rate more than twice the industry average.
Amazon’s warehouse safety practices have been the subject of multiple investigations by federal agencies and prosecutors. Allegations have surfaced accusing the company of manipulating data and failing to adequately document workplace injuries. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York is currently conducting an ongoing investigation into workplace safety at Amazon warehouses.
In response to these concerns, Amazon reported a 43% reduction in its global recordable incident rate since 2019—a metric that tracks work-related injuries requiring more than basic first aid. The company stated it has invested over $2.5 billion in safety improvements since 2019, including hundreds of millions of dollars in 2026 alone.
