WindBorne Systems Secures $37M to Advance AI-Powered Weather Forecasting

WindBorne Systems, a startup specializing in AI-driven weather forecasting, has successfully raised $37 million in a Series B funding round. This investment, co-led by Khosla Ventures and Galvanize, with participation from TransLink Capital, Lux Capital, and existing investors, elevates the company’s valuation to $250 million.

Established in 2019, WindBorne initially focused on deploying cost-effective weather sensors via long-duration balloons to gather atmospheric data. The emergence of AI-based weather models in recent years has enabled the company to develop its own forecasting capabilities, a task previously constrained by the high costs associated with traditional supercomputing resources.

Currently, WindBorne operates 20 launch sites globally, maintaining approximately 600 balloons in flight at any given time. These balloons collect data from remote and challenging environments, such as the eye of a typhoon. The company is also introducing aerial sensor packages designed to descend into oceans, transforming into floating buoys to continue data collection.

The unique dataset generated by this extensive network, referred to by CEO John Dean as a “planetary nervous system,” provides a significant competitive advantage. This proprietary data, combined with information from global government weather agencies, enhances the accuracy and reliability of WindBorne’s forecasting models.

WindBorne’s primary clientele includes government entities. The U.S. National Weather Service purchases the company’s data, while the U.S. Air Force and Navy engage in research partnerships. These collaborations aim to develop forecasting models capable of operating on ships with intermittent connectivity.

Looking ahead, WindBorne plans to expand its commercial operations, targeting investment funds that utilize weather data to predict commodity prices and other business outcomes. The recent funding will support the development of a go-to-market team to broaden the company’s private sector customer base.

Historically, private weather forecasting companies have faced challenges in penetrating the commercial market, often relying on repackaging government forecasts for specialized applications. However, advancements in AI are poised to transform this landscape by making data analysis more efficient and accessible.

Saloni Multani, a partner at Galvanize and co-leader of the funding round, noted that integrating weather forecasts into broader business decision-making has traditionally been expensive and complex. She emphasized that AI has the potential to change this dynamic, making weather data more actionable for a wider range of industries.
