WhatsApp Opens Username Reservations for Enhanced Privacy

WhatsApp has initiated the rollout of username reservations, allowing users to secure unique identifiers ahead of the feature’s official launch later this year. This development marks a significant shift from the platform’s traditional reliance on phone numbers for user identification.

Users will receive in-app notifications when the reservation option becomes available in their region. To reserve a username, navigate to Settings > Account > Username within the app. This feature aims to enhance privacy by enabling users to communicate without disclosing their phone numbers, offering greater control over personal information.

WhatsApp emphasizes that usernames are intended to remain private. There will be no public directory or suggestion system; individuals must know the exact username to initiate contact. Additionally, users can create an optional username key, adding an extra layer of security by requiring this key for first-time communications.

For businesses, creators, and organizations seeking consistency across platforms, WhatsApp provides a claims system to secure the same usernames used on Instagram or Facebook. Usernames must be between 3 and 35 characters, and the platform will reserve certain high-profile names to prevent impersonation.

While the reservation process is underway, the full functionality of usernames will be introduced gradually over the coming months. Users will be notified in-app once the feature becomes available in their country.

Introducing usernames aligns WhatsApp with other messaging platforms that have long offered this feature. This move addresses privacy concerns associated with sharing phone numbers and reflects a broader industry trend toward enhancing user control over personal data. As the feature rolls out, it will be interesting to observe how users adapt and whether it influences communication patterns on the platform.
