watchOS 27 lands with Siri AI, redesigned face, Smart Stack upgrades

Apple has officially released watchOS 27, the latest update for Apple Watch. As of September 14, 2026, it’s free to download for compatible models—Series 9 and newer, Apple Watch Ultra 2 and newer, and the third-generation SE. The update rolls out via the Settings app on your watch.

All about Siri AI and system upgrades

At the heart of watchOS 27 is Siri AI—a more conversational assistant that taps into personal context, on-screen cues, and a deep well of world knowledge. Users can expect richer, more natural voices, with expressivity and pacing that can be customized. But note: Siri AI requires an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone—specifically, the iPhone 15 Pro line, iPhone Air, and all iPhone 16, 17, and 18 models.

The Watch sees improvements beyond Siri. The Workout Buddy feature now works without your iPhone if you’re on Wi-Fi or cellular. Phone app conversations with businesses can trigger smart ideas like showing confirmation numbers or reservations. For those tracking their cycles, settings now offer perimenopause-related alerts for users aged 40 and up.

Face, Smart Stack, and UX refinements

A new Siri Modular watch face has been added, sporting a rectangular complication that mirrors the top widget of the Smart Stack and makes invoking Siri quicker via a dedicated complication. Smart Stack itself becomes more responsive, surfacing widgets based on what’s relevant—such as reminders, parked car location, transit card balance, notifications following loud noises, and upcoming birthdays. A unique one-handed tap gesture (index finger to thumb) lets you pick a widget even if one hand is busy.

Design changes also touch the Liquid Glass visual effect, sharpening contrast and evening out refraction across backgrounds. The app grid adjusts to emphasize apps you use most. Media controls open faster. Workout tracking is more precise, especially early in treadmill runs, and post-workout route mapping is more accurate. For those minding battery life, the system may suggest disabling certain features—gesture control, Start Workout prompts, or the “Raise to Speak” gesture—to squeeze out more time between charges.

The Find My experience has been streamlined; People, Devices, and Items sections are now consolidated into one map-focused app. Music recognition tools like Shazam are smarter—identifying tracks offline and delivering full results once you’re back online.

What this means—and who gets left behind

This update deepens Apple’s push on intelligent assistants and context-aware wearable tech. Siri AI with on-device processing (on newer iPhones) and richer Smart Stack behaviors show Apple doubling down on personalization. The system improvements improve usability in everyday use—faster media, more accurate health and fitness tracking, smarter battery suggestions—all tipped toward making the watch more autonomous from the iPhone.

That said, the requirement of newer iPhones for key features like Siri AI limits what older device owners will see. And while enhancements to cycle tracking around perimenopause are useful, the watchOS update doesn’t radically shift the health tracking paradigm. Still, for those with eligible hardware, watchOS 27 delivers meaningful refinements that move the platform forward.
