Valve Halts Dbrand’s Companion Cube Skin for Steam Machine

Valve has intervened to stop Dbrand’s sale of the Companion Cube conversion kit for the Steam Machine, leading to the product’s removal from Dbrand’s website and the issuance of refunds to customers.

Dbrand had invested over a thousand hours and significant resources into developing this accessory, which transformed the Steam Machine into a replica of the iconic Companion Cube from Valve’s Portal series. The kit was among Dbrand’s fastest-selling products, second only to the Switch 2 Killswitch.

However, Dbrand did not secure a license from Valve to use the Portal intellectual property. Shortly after the product’s launch, Valve requested its removal from sale and associated marketing materials. Dbrand attempted to negotiate a licensing agreement to continue offering the kit, but Valve declined.

As a result, the Companion Cube conversion kit is no longer available, and customers who had placed orders are receiving refunds. Dbrand plans to continue offering other skins for the Steam Machine, though none are expected to match the uniqueness of the Companion Cube design.

This development underscores the importance of securing proper licensing agreements when creating products based on existing intellectual properties. While Dbrand’s initiative showcased creativity and resonated with fans, the lack of prior authorization led to its abrupt discontinuation. Companies should ensure they have the necessary permissions to avoid similar setbacks.
