Uber to Launch Premium Robotaxi Service in Houston by 2027

Uber has announced plans to introduce its premium robotaxi service in Houston by mid-2027, marking the second U.S. city to host this initiative following San Francisco. This expansion is part of Uber’s collaboration with electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid Motors and autonomous technology company Nuro.

In San Francisco, Uber, Lucid, and Nuro have been actively preparing to launch their robotaxi service. Nuro has been testing Lucid Gravity SUVs equipped with its self-driving system in the city, including offering rides to Uber employees. Despite receiving a permit from the California Department of Motor Vehicles to operate without a safety driver, these vehicles currently still have human operators present.

In Houston, Uber and Nuro have deployed a fleet of 100 autonomous vehicles for public road testing, all with safety operators on board. These tests are complemented by closed-course trials and simulations to ensure the self-driving system’s reliability before public deployment. The fleet is expected to grow as Lucid begins manufacturing the production versions of the robotaxis at its Arizona facility.

The Lucid Gravity robotaxi, unveiled in January, is equipped with high-resolution cameras, solid-state lidar sensors, and radars to navigate its environment. Uber, which will own and operate the fleet, is focusing on enhancing the in-cabin experience for passengers.

To support the Houston launch, Uber has established a 50,000-square-foot depot with dedicated charging facilities, serving as the operational hub for the robotaxi fleet.

This partnership has been beneficial for both Nuro and Lucid. Nuro shifted its business model in 2024 from building delivery robots to licensing its autonomous technology to partners like Uber. Lucid, facing challenges in scaling EV sales, has found a significant customer in Uber, which has committed to investing $500 million in Lucid and purchasing at least 35,000 robotaxi-ready vehicles.

Uber’s expansion into Houston’s robotaxi market signifies a strategic move to establish a foothold in autonomous ride-hailing services. Competing with established players like Waymo, Uber’s collaboration with Lucid and Nuro aims to offer a premium experience that could set it apart. The success of this venture will depend on the seamless integration of autonomous technology, vehicle performance, and user experience. As the industry evolves, Uber’s approach may influence the broader adoption and acceptance of robotaxi services.
