Trump Mobile’s T1 Phone: A Controversial Launch Amid Quality and Pricing Concerns
Trump Mobile has announced that its long-awaited T1 smartphone will begin shipping this week, following a year of delays and controversy. The company shared this update via a post on X, accompanied by a promotional video describing the T1 as a powerful device designed for performance, reliability, and real American value.
However, the T1’s journey has been fraught with challenges. Initially marketed as a Made in America smartphone, it was later revealed that the device is a rebranded Chinese model, specifically the HTC U24 Pro from 2024. This revelation led to the removal of Made in America claims from Trump Mobile’s website.
The HTC U24 Pro, upon which the T1 is based, received mixed reviews at launch. Tech Advisor noted some nice touches but highlighted strange bugs, awkward handling, and a short lifespan. NotebookCheck labeled it out of date, and users on Reddit criticized its camera quality. The device originally shipped with Android 14 and was later updated to Android 15. With Android 17 set to be announced soon, the T1’s software may already be outdated upon release.
Pricing has also raised eyebrows. While early depositors paid $100 towards the T1, new customers are expected to pay at least $599. This price point places the T1 in direct competition with the iPhone 17e, which offers superior performance and features.
Further scrutiny reveals that Trump Mobile’s final assembly in the U.S. involves minimal tasks, such as attaching the back panel with branding and packaging the device. This has led to criticism that the company’s claims of American manufacturing are misleading.
In addition to the T1, Trump Mobile has been selling renewed models of other smartphones. For instance, a refurbished iPhone 15 with 128GB storage is priced at $629, running iOS 18. In contrast, Apple sells the same model new for $699 with iOS 26, and Amazon offers it renewed for around $425. Similarly, the iPhone 14 is available renewed for approximately $305 on Amazon, while Trump Mobile lists it at $489.
The T1’s launch has been marred by delays and shifting narratives. After missing its initial release window in late summer 2025, the date was pushed to early 2026. A redesign of Trump Mobile’s website in April 2026 removed any mention of a release date, instead offering a join the waitlist option.
Approximately 590,000 customers placed a $100 deposit for the T1, totaling around $59 million. Despite this substantial sum, the device’s future remains uncertain. The company’s terms of service state that the deposit provides only a conditional opportunity to purchase the T1 if it becomes available. If the device is canceled, refunds will be issued, but Trump Mobile is not liable for delays due to factors like parts shortages or regulatory issues.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has been urged to investigate Trump Mobile’s practices, including alleged bait-and-switch tactics and false advertising regarding the Made in the USA claim. As of May 2026, the FTC has not confirmed whether an investigation is underway.
