Threads Introduces Web Messaging and Live Chats to Enhance User Engagement
Meta’s social networking platform, Threads, has unveiled a significant update by introducing direct messaging (DM) capabilities to its web interface. This enhancement allows users to engage in both one-on-one and group conversations directly from their desktop computers, aligning Threads more closely with competitors such as X and Bluesky.
Connor Hayes, the head of Threads at Meta, highlighted that web messaging was the most requested feature following the platform’s initial rollout of DMs in July 2025. He noted that the most engaged users often access Threads via desktop, emphasizing the necessity for the application to function seamlessly across all devices.
The updated web version of Threads now features a Messages tab, providing access to the DM inbox and a Requests section for incoming message requests. Users can also search their messages and initiate new chats with ease.
This development follows a previous announcement by Hayes in April, where he indicated that web messaging would soon be integrated into Threads’ desktop experience. Since its launch in 2023, Threads has been committed to expanding its features to remain competitive. Notably, the platform recently introduced Live Chats, a unique feature that facilitates real-time conversations during cultural events. This feature debuted within the NBA Threads community during the playoffs, allowing users to share messages, photos, videos, links, and emoji reactions. Each Live Chat can accommodate up to 150 active participants, with additional users able to view the conversation, react to messages, and participate in polls in a spectator mode.
The introduction of web messaging and Live Chats underscores Threads’ dedication to enhancing conversational experiences on its platform, moving beyond traditional posts and replies to foster more dynamic user interactions.
