Social Media Platforms Empower Users with Customizable Algorithms

For years, social media platforms have dictated the content users see through opaque recommendation algorithms. While users could follow accounts and express preferences, the underlying algorithms largely controlled their feeds. This dynamic is shifting as platforms introduce tools that allow users to personalize their content streams using artificial intelligence.

Meta’s Threads app has been at the forefront of this evolution. In February 2026, Threads introduced the “Dear Algo” feature, enabling users to influence their feeds by posting public requests like “Dear Algo, show me more posts about podcasts.” This allowed users to signal their content preferences directly. Building on this, in July 2026, Threads launched “Your Algo,” a feature that lets users privately specify topics they want to see more or less of, with options to set these preferences for durations of one, three, or seven days.

Instagram, also under Meta’s umbrella, has implemented similar personalization tools. In early June 2026, Instagram expanded its “Your Algorithm” feature, initially available for Reels, to encompass the entire feed and Explore sections. This tool displays the topics influencing a user’s recommendations and allows them to adjust these topics to better align with their interests.

TikTok has joined this trend by introducing the “Manage Topics” tool in 2024. Accessible through the app’s settings, this feature enables users to customize their “For You” feed by selecting preferred topics, such as sports or travel, thereby tailoring their content experience.

Bluesky, a decentralized social media platform, has taken a unique approach by offering users the ability to create custom feeds through its AI assistant, Attie. Launched in March 2026, Attie allows users to design their own algorithms and curate personalized content streams within the Bluesky ecosystem.

These developments signify a broader shift in the social media landscape, moving away from one-size-fits-all algorithms toward user-driven content curation. By granting users more control over their feeds, platforms aim to enhance user satisfaction and engagement. This trend reflects a growing recognition of the importance of transparency and user agency in digital experiences.

As social media continues to evolve, the balance between algorithmic guidance and user control will be crucial. Platforms that successfully empower users while maintaining content relevance are likely to lead the next phase of digital interaction.
