Snap and Perplexity Terminate $400 Million AI Integration Agreement
In a recent announcement, Snap Inc. disclosed the termination of its $400 million agreement with Perplexity, an AI-powered search engine. This partnership, initially unveiled in November 2025, aimed to embed Perplexity’s AI search capabilities directly into Snapchat’s interface, enhancing user experience by providing conversational answers within the app.
The original deal stipulated that Perplexity would compensate Snap with $400 million in cash and equity over a one-year period. However, during Snap’s latest quarterly earnings report, the company stated that the collaboration had amicably ended in the first quarter of 2026. Consequently, Snap’s financial projections no longer account for any revenue from this partnership.
The integration was designed to allow Snapchat users to interact with Perplexity’s AI directly through the app’s Chat feature. While initial testing was conducted with a select group of users, by February 2026, both companies acknowledged that they had not reached a consensus on a broader rollout strategy.
At the time of the partnership’s announcement, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel emphasized the company’s commitment to leveraging AI to enhance content discovery on Snapchat. He expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with innovative partners to achieve this vision.
Despite the dissolution of this particular agreement, Snap reported positive user growth metrics. Global daily active users (DAU) increased by 5% year-over-year, reaching 483 million, while monthly active users (MAU) also saw a 5% rise, totaling 965 million. The company attributed this growth to the introduction of new features such as Snap Map and augmented reality (AR) filters known as Lenses.
Spiegel highlighted the company’s achievements in the first quarter, noting a return to growth in daily active users, accelerated revenue growth, expanded margins, and strong free cash flow. He reiterated Snap’s focus on disciplined execution and investment in long-term opportunities, including intelligent eyewear, with more details expected to be shared at the upcoming Augmented World Expo (AWE) on June 16th.
In April 2026, Snap announced a reduction of approximately 16% of its global workforce, affecting around 1,000 full-time employees. The company cited advancements in AI as a contributing factor to these layoffs, indicating a strategic shift in its operational focus.
Perplexity, on the other hand, has been actively pursuing various strategic initiatives. In January 2025, the company submitted a bid to merge with TikTok’s U.S. operations, proposing the creation of a new entity combining Perplexity, TikTok U.S., and additional equity partners. This move was aimed at expanding Perplexity’s reach and integrating more video content into its AI search engine.
In October 2025, Perplexity acquired the team behind Visual Electric, a Sequoia-backed AI design startup. This acquisition was intended to bolster Perplexity’s capabilities in delivering innovative consumer product experiences.
Furthermore, in August 2025, Perplexity made an unsolicited offer to purchase Google’s Chrome browser for $34.5 billion in cash. The proposal included commitments to keep Chrome’s underlying engine, Chromium, open source and to invest $3 billion into the open-source project. This bold move underscored Perplexity’s ambition to challenge established players in the search and browser markets.
Despite these aggressive expansion efforts, the termination of the partnership with Snap represents a significant shift in Perplexity’s strategic alliances. The company has not yet provided a public statement regarding the end of this agreement.
Snap’s decision to end the partnership with Perplexity reflects the dynamic nature of the tech industry, where companies continually reassess collaborations to align with evolving strategic goals and market conditions. As both companies move forward independently, the industry will be watching closely to see how they adapt and innovate in the rapidly changing digital landscape.
