Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Z Flip 8, the latest iteration in its line of foldable smartphones. While the device introduces some enhancements, it largely mirrors its predecessor, the Z Flip 7, in design and functionality.
The Z Flip 8 maintains the familiar clamshell design, featuring a 6.9-inch AMOLED inner display and a 4.1-inch cover screen. Notably, the device is slightly thinner and lighter, weighing approximately 180 grams. This reduction in bulk enhances portability without compromising the device’s structural integrity.
Under the hood, the Z Flip 8 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, marking a return to Snapdragon processors after a year of utilizing Exynos. This shift results in improved performance, with the device delivering top-tier scores in both Geekbench and 3DMark benchmarks. The device comes equipped with 12GB of RAM and offers storage options of 256GB and 512GB.
The camera system remains unchanged from the previous model, featuring a 50MP main sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP front-facing camera. While the hardware is consistent, new video features like Horizontal Lock have been introduced to enhance vlogging capabilities.
Battery capacity stands at 4,300mAh, identical to the Z Flip 7. However, the introduction of silicon-carbon battery technology aims to improve efficiency. Despite this, real-world usage indicates that battery life remains around 12.5 hours, similar to its predecessor.
Software-wise, the Z Flip 8 runs on Android 17 with Samsung’s One UI 9. The FlexWindow cover screen has been updated to support more apps and widgets, offering a more integrated experience. However, some users may find the cover screen’s functionality still somewhat limited.
Priced at $1,199, the Z Flip 8 is $100 more expensive than the previous model. This price increase, coupled with the incremental nature of the upgrades, may make it a less compelling option for those who already own the Z Flip 7. However, for newcomers to foldable devices or those upgrading from older models, the Z Flip 8 offers a refined and stylish entry point into the foldable smartphone market.
In the broader context of the foldable phone market, the Z Flip 8 faces competition from devices like the Motorola Razr Ultra 2026, which offers better battery life and photo detail at a similar price point. This competitive landscape underscores the need for Samsung to innovate further to maintain its position in the foldable market.
While the Galaxy Z Flip 8 showcases Samsung’s commitment to the foldable form factor, the lack of significant innovation raises questions about the future direction of the Z Flip series. As the market for foldable devices matures, consumers may begin to expect more substantial advancements to justify premium pricing.
