CEO Job van der Voort emphasizes the pervasive role of AI within Remote, stating, As we are talking, on the second screen of my laptop, I have five different Claude instances running, building different things — and some of those are for me, but a lot of them are for Remote. This includes a Slack agent that summarizes discussions and experiments with agentic AI, illustrating how AI tools are embedded into daily operations to enhance productivity.

The company’s approach to AI adoption extends beyond the executive suite and engineering department. Employees across various functions have been actively developing applications within Remote Labs, an internal marketplace built on the company’s technology. This initiative mirrors the AI capabilities that Remote is now offering to its clients, enabling them to create custom workflows tailored to their specific needs.

To further assist clients in leveraging AI, Remote has established Remote Build, a service that provides forward-deployed engineers who collaborate directly with customers to implement similar AI-driven solutions within their organizations. Van der Voort remarks, Obviously we’ve been automating a lot of that; that’s what we do. But with AI that became easier, and arguably more fun than ever before.

Despite its name, Remote caters to all types of businesses, including those with traditional office settings. Van der Voort clarifies, We do payroll for everybody, period. This development enables clients to control all of Remote’s services through AI agents, potentially eliminating the need for direct interaction with the platform. Van der Voort envisions a future where AI agents interact directly with Remote, ensuring security standards are met for handling sensitive financial and personal information.

Internally, Remote has embraced AI-powered coding, resulting in a more than 60% increase in engineering contributions over the past year. In the last month alone, over 85% of the company’s code was written by AI. This shift has led to a reevaluation of hiring plans, focusing on upskilling existing employees to utilize AI tools effectively rather than expanding the workforce.

Van der Voort emphasizes the importance of balancing AI investment with financial health, stating, Our spend on AI is increasing, but we keep track of it, so it’s something that we’re happy with; and because we become more efficient as a company, we have some space to spend that on AI and those initiatives.
