Google’s latest flagship, the Pixel 11 Pro, has recently undergone durability assessments by the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL). While the device boasts enhanced scratch resistance, its performance in drop tests has raised some concerns.
The EPREL evaluates smartphones on various parameters, including battery capacity, dust and water resistance, repairability, and durability. A key component of this evaluation is the “Repeated free fall reliability test,” which measures how many drops a device can endure without sustaining defects.
In this year’s assessments, the Pixel 11 series received an overall “B” rating, consistent with the previous year’s evaluations. However, a closer examination reveals disparities among the different models:
- Pixel 11: 270 drops, “A” rating
- Pixel 11 Pro: 180 drops, “B” rating
- Pixel 11 Pro XL: 270 drops, “A” rating
- Pixel 11 Pro Fold: 210 drops, “A” rating
Notably, the standard Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold all achieved an “A” rating, indicating high durability. In contrast, the Pixel 11 Pro managed only 180 drops before defects appeared, resulting in a “B” rating. This is a significant deviation from the Pixel 10 Pro’s performance last year, which withstood 270 drops and secured an “A” rating.
The reasons behind the Pixel 11 Pro’s reduced drop resilience remain unclear. Potential factors could include design modifications, material changes, or manufacturing variations. It’s also possible that testing anomalies contributed to these results. Further investigations and real-world usage will be essential to determine the device’s true durability.
